The question that started it
In Q2 2024, a new technician leaned into my office doorway and asked, “Is the alternator part of the engine?”
He wasn't testing me. He was 23, fresh out of a two-year automotive program, and he needed to order a replacement alternator for a fleet tractor. The parts catalog classified it under “charging system,” but his day shift supervisor kept calling it an engine part. So he walked over to the person who signs the POs and asked a basic question.
I didn't answer him right away. Truthfully, I wasn't 100% sure myself. I'm a procurement manager, not a mechanic. But I know something about parts sourcing, and that question triggered something. “Yeah, we do all that.”
“And the alternator would be listed under engine parts?”
There was a pause. “Well, it's driven by the engine, so basically, yes.”
I didn't correct him. But I did remember what happened two years earlier with wheel hub caps. We bought a cheap set from a “we do everything” supplier because they were $6 per cap less than the OEM-grade parts. Two of those caps cracked the first time the hubs reached highway temperature. What the specialist said

Six months later, I ran a comparison in our cost tracking system. The trucks we'd serviced with this parts set had no unplanned wheel-end repairs. Zero tow calls for hubs or bearings. What impressed me more was the total cost picture. The price difference between the specialist and the generalist was about $330. One tow event would have wiped that out. We had zero tow events.
Across the same period the previous year, on the older cheap parts, we'd logged three bearing-related service events: one rock-in-cage failure, one cracked cap, and one boot failure that contaminated a CV joint. The maintenance cost for that truck alone covered the price difference across the entire order.
I'm not going to claim our sample size is huge. It's one medium-size fleet, one quarter, one set of parts. If you're buying parts for a single vehicle, the math might be different. But here's the thing: price doesn't tell you about fit, durability, support, or honesty. The only way to learn those is to pay attention when a supplier says, “That's not our area.”
The lesson I keep re-learning
So, for the record: is the alternator part of the engine? No. It's part of the vehicle's charging system. It's driven by the engine via a belt, but the two systems are separate. The alternator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy; the engine turns fuel into mechanical energy. When you order parts, that distinction matters. If your supplier thinks an alternator is an engine part, they might not know where their own components end either.
The conventional wisdom is that one-stop shops save time. My experience with more than two hundred orders says otherwise. A specialist who knows their limit will save you more money than a generalist who overpromises. When I compared the two quotes side by side, I finally understood why the labels “cheap” and “expensive” were almost useless. The specialist's price was higher. The total cost was lower.
I still buy from generalists sometimes. For routine items like clips, hose clamps, or wiper blades, it's fine. But when the part is safety-critical—bearings, drive joints, hub caps, dampers—I want someone who can tell me what they won't do. I'd rather hear “this isn't our strength” than “we can handle it, send us the money.”
That new technician didn't know the correct alternator category, and neither did I at that moment. But he asked. That's the same behavior that got us to the right supplier: asking until you find a person who draws an accurate line around their expertise. If you ask me, that honesty is worth more than a discount code. Done.
